SADAKO GOES TO SCIENCE CENTRUM

Sadako recently went on her very first field trip and I was so excited for her – so I tagged along. 

No Coca-Cola plant or Crayola factory, however (maybe next year).

Instead we went to Science Centrum and Kidzoona (more on Kidzoona in another blog post). 


I don’t think I’ve ever been to Science Centrum. It was my first time and I unfortunately don’t have a lot of nice things to say about it. 

The guide that day took forever to gather the kids and give an intro. Their sound system was also awful that day; it wasn’t working properly so the guide had to say his spiels again and again (as if it would matter to the kids), plus the volume was really loud. It was so loud I had to sneak in and turn it down myself because kawawa naman the eardrums of the kids. I tried to call his attention but, well, he couldn’t hear me coz it was really loud nga. 

And then a lot of the stuff were either old or not working. There were even some things that had rusty parts I had to pull Sadako away from them. 


Lastly, it was very hot inside. They had some giant electrical fans but you’d only benefit from them if you were standing right in front of one.   I had to run after Sadako so imagine how extra tiring that was considering it was so hot inside the place. They really should invest in air conditioning. 

Good thing Sadako still had a good time because she was with her classmates.  What did she enjoy the most?

I loved singing and performing for relatives and guests at home when I was young. One time, when I was about four years old, my mother asked me to sing Tomorrow for our relatives who were visiting. I instantly burst into song. However, after singing the first line with so much passion, I decided to stop and asked to be excused. TAO NA!

I’ve always found the expression “Tao na!” (used to describe a baby who’s already acting like a big kid or an adult) hilarious, but I found myself using it a couple of hours ago when Sadako kept on bugging Honeybun, my sister and I while we were enjoying our shawarma pizza dinner. To shut her up, we offered her a bite. As it turned out, she wanted more than just a bite. Good thing we didn’t put hot sauce on all the slices. Tao na!

HIGH ON HI-5

Some years ago, back when my now-1-year old daughter Sadako wasn’t even an idea yet, I came across an article about how supposedly bad TV is for babies and young kids. I now don’t remember the boob tube’s bad effects on little ones (although I really should Google that), but whatever they are, my daughter must already be suffering from them because watching TV has been a daily habit for her for half a year now. Blame me and my girlfriend, Honeybun; we always have the TV set turned on. Apart from being soothing background noise, we discovered that it can be some sort of a babysitter, too. For example, certain commercials would make our daughter stop crying or catch her attention long enough for us to squeeze in drops of yucky medicine inside her mouth. Sadako is picky, though, so we bought a stack of DVDs and VCDs to entertain her whenever her favorite commercials aren’t on air.
